Cada temporada navideña, una embajadora mexicana recorre el mundo para dar un toque de belleza a esta época del año: ella, la preciosa y famosa Flor de Noche Buena, conocida también como flor de navidad, flor de pascua o pastora, su nombre científico es Euphorbia pulcherrima, voz latina que para orgullo de México y de los oaxaqueños significa la más bella.
También es conocida como Poinsettia pulcherrima, en honor al Secretario de Estado de EEU en México que la hizo famosa en el mundo, Joel Roberts Poinsett (17791851) médico, botánico y estadista estadounidense, miembro de la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos, Secretario de Guerra y fundador del Instituto Nacional para la promoción de las Ciencias. En su honor se nombró el Condado de Poinsett y a la flor de nochebuena que encontró en México, en 1825, Poinsettia. Desde el año 1991, el 12 de diciembre está declarado en Estados Unidos como Día Nacional de la Poinsettia.
LA FLOR DE NOCHE BUENA EN OAXACA.
En Oaxaca es identificada además con los nombres de flor catalina , flor de Santa Catalina y Santa Catarina; en Náhuatl es conocida como Cuetlaxóchitl y en zapoteco es llamada gule-tiini y lipa que-pojua en lengua chontal.
Cuando el cientifico ruso Nicolai Vavilov declaró en 1929 que el origen del maíz estaba en el sur de México, dificilmente los oaxaqueños imaginaríamos que en el año 2010 la UNESCO reconocería que el origen del maíz, la planta más cultivada en el mundo, está en Oaxaca, merced a la extraordinaria hazaña cultural de los antiguos zapotecas que lograron domesticar y engrandecer el pequeño teocintle silvestre.
Cito lo anterior, porque en forma similar la Comision Nacional para el conocimiento y uso de la biodiversidad, CONABIO, señala que la flor de noche buena es originaria .. del sur de México y tal vez de Guatemala. Menciona tambien que las poblaciones silvestres mas extensas se encuentran en los estados de Guerrero, Oaxaca y Chiapas.
Nada extraño sería que en el futuro se reconociera que la universalmente conocida Flor de noche buena es originaria de Oaxaca, el estado con la mayor diversidad biológica del pais, condicion sobresaliente porque México es el cuarto país con megabiodiversidad en el mundo.
En este país mega diverso, Oaxaca brilla con luz propia, ya que aquí se encuentran prácticamente todos los ecosistemas presentes en el territorio mexicano y están representadas mas del 50% de las especies de flora y fauna del país, de las cuales 702 especies de plantas y 128 de vertebrados son endémicas.
Para tener idea de esta espectacular riqueza biológica, basta decir que la diversidad de aves de Oaxaca es superior a la variedad de aves de los enormes territorios conjuntos de Estado Unidos y Canadá y que su biodiversidad es mayor que la de los países como Guatemala y Costa Rica, por lo que resulta natural que asumamos que la Noche Buena es originaria de Oaxaca, como se deduce de la bella y fascinante leyenda de la antigüedad zapoteca, sobre el origen de la flor de Noche buena, que todavia se escucha entre los ancianos del valle de Oaxaca.
Hoy, esta bella y famosa flor es un símbolo de paz universal que debe enorgullecer a los oaxaqueños; espíritu de paz que emerge de nuestro remoto pasado como afirma la leyenda que rescató el muy apreciado Don Alfonso Rulle de dos ancianos, uno de San Jose Mogote y otro de Rojas de Cuauhtémoc.
LA LEYENDA DE SU ORIGEN.
La leyenda se remonta a la lejana época en que el valle de Oaxaca estaba inundado por varios lagos. Roaló significa justamente en la boca del Lago; el árbol de Tule creció a la orilla de la laguna de ese lugar: Burgoa y Jose Antonio Gay relatan como se abrió en la antigüedad un cauce para desecar los lagos que inundaban el valle de Oaxaca y este pasado húmedo de Oaxaca es relatado por el geógrafo oaxaqueño Don Jorge L. Tamayo en sus acuciosos estudios sobre los valles centrales.
Los siete grandes señores del valle, los aguerridos caciques de San Jose Mogote, de Teotitlan, de Tomaltepec, de Macuilxóchitl, de Abasolo, de Suchilquitongo y de Huitzo, estaban enfrascados en luchas internas y guerras fraticidas que derramaban abundante sangre entre hermanos zapotecos.
Como maldición divina las guerras continuaban encarnizadamente por lo que la sangre derramada no solo teñia de rojo los espejos del cielo, como llamaban los antiguos a los lagos del valle, sino tambien, como contaban ellos mismos, el río Atoyac llevaba ya más sangre que agua.
Las plegarias de las madres zapotecas, envueltas en el humo del copal, en el aroma de sus flores, en el rocío de sus llantos y en el dolor infinito de sus hijos muertos, se elevaban sin cesar pidiendo clemencia ante los oidos sordos de los dioses, que obstinados, continuaban sembrando la cizaña en los corazones de los señores zapotecos.
Pero más obstinadas fueron las mujeres zapotecas, cuyos ruegos finalmente abrieron la compasion del dador del aliento, del señor de la fertilidad, del multiplicador de vida: el dios murciélago, aquel que antes que perdiera por castigo divino su brillante plumaje, en un giro majestuoso dejó pintado en el cielo el arcoíris.
Portador del mensaje celestial, un murcielago entró al gran salon del consejo de guerra, donde los rostros crispados de los capitanes clamaban más sangre, mayor beligerancia, venganza sin piedad, en un interminable torbellino de violencia y muerte.
Esta aparición inédita obligó a consultar a los ancianos y adivinos, quienes interpetaron el extraordinario suceso y ordenaron a los los 7 señores del valle hacer a un lado a los embajadores y dialogar directamente entre ellos.
Al encontrarse frente a frente los grandes señores zapotecos, se reconocieron como hermanos, como primos, como hijos, como padres; la fuerza de los lazos de sangre, de familia, resurgió vivamente entre ellos y decidieron no sólo terminar las luchas fraticidas, sino unirse todos en un solo lugar, en una fortaleza inexpugnable para defenderse de los enemigos del exterior y alentados por esta gran hermandad, pactaron subirse a la montaña sagrada y construir juntos, la bellísima ciudad de Monte Albán. Sellaron este pacto de paz, uniendo sus pulgares con una gota de sangre.
El agua donde se lavaron las manos los señores que acordaron este pacto inquebrantable de paz entre hermanos, fue derramada en la corriente del rio Atoyac, que impetuosó, entró para cruzar las montañas y derramarse en la mar del sur, en un estrecho cañón plagado de rocas y salientes, que salpicadas con las gotas escarlatas del atoyac, dieron nacimiento a una hermosa flor cuyas siete hojas tenían el color intenso de la sangre con que sellaron su alianza los siete señoríos zapotecas: La Noche Buena.
Con el advenimiento de la religión católica, el sincretismo religioso transformó esta bella flor en un mensaje universal de paz para la humanidad.
